In the book The cask of Amontillado, Edgar Allan Poe explores various themes including revenge and criminality. The book was written and consequently published in the mid 19th century. Montresor is the narrator in the story and begins the story through a critical reflection of a half century of his actions.

The author uses flashback perfectly to tell a story that happened 50 years ago. The major theme that Poe espouses entails revenge (Poe 32). The root cause of Fortunato’s murder was revenge that led to Montresor’s quest. However, as espoused by Sova, the author fails to convince the audience precisely on the reason for Montresor’s vengeance (3).
